Searching for a wheelchair accessible hotel in Kenya can mean scrolling through dozens of listings that say “accessible” without ever explaining what that means in practice. Grab bars get photographed at flattering angles, “accessible” gets used loosely, and door widths are rarely mentioned at all. So for this guide to wheelchair friendly resorts on the Kenya coast, we didn’t rely on hotel websites — we went and checked ourselves.

Over the past few weeks, the Access Enabled team travelled the full length of the Kenya coast — from Malindi in the north, through Watamu and Mombasa, down to Diani Beach in the south — knocking on doors, measuring thresholds, and asking the only question that actually matters: can a wheelchair user stay here comfortably? Here’s what we found, resort by resort.

Wheelchair Accessible Hotels in Malindi

Ocean Beach Resort & Spa — 1 accessible room. A useful anchor point for anyone building a disability-friendly Malindi holiday, though with only one accessible room, early booking matters.

Accessible Hotels in Watamu

Turtle Bay Beach Resort — 2 accessible rooms. A welcome addition between Malindi and the Mombasa North Coast, and good news for anyone building an accessible Watamu itinerary around the marine park and reef.

Wheelchair Accessible Resorts on the Mombasa North Coast (Bamburi & Shanzu)

Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa — 4 accessible rooms. One of the coast’s larger established disabled-friendly resorts in Mombasa, and a solid option for groups or families travelling with a wheelchair user.

Travellers Beach Resort — 4 accessible rooms, and a detail worth calling out on its own: an inclined platform lift serving the conference rooms, so wheelchair users aren’t left outside when there’s a meeting, workshop, or event happening on-site. This is the kind of accessibility feature that rarely makes it onto a hotel’s website but makes a real difference for corporate and group travel.

PrideInn Paradise — 3 accessible rooms. Part of the PrideInn group’s growing footprint on the North Coast.

Severin Sea Lodge — 1 accessible room.

Wheelchair Accessible Resorts in Diani Beach

Diani Reef Beach Resort & Spa — 12 accessible rooms. By a wide margin the deepest accessible room inventory we found anywhere on the Kenya coast, and genuinely good news for larger groups or peak-season travel, when single-room availability elsewhere can be the limiting factor.

Southern Palms Beach Resort — 5 accessible rooms, across one of Diani Beach’s largest beachfront properties.

Diamonds Leisure Beach & Golf Resort (“Diamonds Diani”) — 2 accessible rooms.

Leopard Beach Resort & Spa — 1 accessible room.

Maji Beach Boutique Hotel — 1 accessible room, in an intimate, adults-focused property — a nice option for couples looking for something quieter than the larger resorts.

Accessible Rooms on the Kenya Coast: The Numbers at a Glance

That’s 36 verified wheelchair accessible rooms across eleven properties, spanning the full length of the Kenya coast from Malindi to Diani Beach — every one of them now catalogued in the Access Enabled accessibility database, so future travellers and travel trade partners planning accessible Kenya coast holidays don’t have to make the same trip to find out what we just did.

How to Get to the Kenya Coast

Once you know which wheelchair accessible coastal resort is right for you, the next question is how to actually get there. There are three main ways to travel from Nairobi to Kenya’s coast, and each has its own accessibility considerations.

By Air: Wilson Airport, JKIA, or Straight From the Bush

Flying is the fastest and generally most accessible way to reach the coast from Nairobi. There are two departure points to know:

• Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) — the main international gateway, served by scheduled airlines flying direct to Mombasa (Moi International Airport), with wheelchair assistance available through the terminal.
• Wilson Airport — Nairobi’s domestic and safari hub, from which scheduled carriers fly directly to Diani/Ukunda, Malindi, and Mombasa.

If your trip includes a safari before the beach, you don’t need to fly back through Nairobi at all. Mombasa Air Safari operates scheduled flights connecting bush airstrips — Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, and Samburu — directly to the coast, landing at Diani/Ukunda, Mombasa, or Malindi. This “bush to beach” routing is one of the most efficient ways to combine an accessible safari with a coastal stay, and it’s a routing we can build directly into your itinerary along with accessible airport transfers on both ends.

By SGR: The Madaraka Express

The Nairobi–Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), operated as the Madaraka Express, is a scenic and comfortable way to reach the coast overland — around 4 hours 50 minutes non-stop, departing from the Nairobi Terminus (Syokimau) and arriving at the Mombasa Terminus (Miritini), roughly 20km from Mombasa town with onward connections to Nyali, Bamburi, and Diani.

Wheelchair assistance is available at both terminals, and the train itself is generally accessible, though some carriages have narrower aisles than others — we’d recommend arranging assistance in advance and booking through us so the right seating and station support is confirmed ahead of travel, rather than discovered on the day.

By Road

The Nairobi–Mombasa highway covers roughly 485km and takes 7–9 hours by road, passing through Tsavo along the way. For wheelchair users, public buses and shared transport are not a reliable option — the accessible route is a private, adapted vehicle for the full journey, or a shorter road transfer once you’ve arrived by air or rail. This is exactly the gap our own fleet is built to close.

New on the Ground: A Ramped Toyota Esquire, Based in Mombasa

Verifying accessible rooms and travel routes is only half the job — getting between them is the other half. So we’re introducing a wheelchair accessible Toyota Esquire fitted with a ramp, now based permanently in Mombasa, ready for:

• Airport transfers to and from Moi International Airport, and pickups from the SGR’s Mombasa Terminus
• Hotel transfers between any of the resorts above, or elsewhere on the coast
• Day trips — Old Town Mombasa, Wasini Island, Shimba Hills, or wherever the day takes you

The Esquire’s 8-seater layout with ramp access means it works equally well for a solo wheelchair traveller and companion, or a mixed group where only some guests need the ramp — one vehicle, no compromises, no need to book a second car for the rest of the party.

Getting into the Indian Ocean just got a lot easier — the Hippocampe beach wheelchair is now available for hire in Kenya, opening up the shoreline to travelers who’d otherwise be stuck watching the water from the sand. Designed specifically for use in and around the ocean, it lets wheelchair users get right into the surf with the same ease and independence as anyone else. It also comes fitted with balloon flotation tyres, which glide over soft sand far more easily than standard wheels and can be a better fit for certain users depending on their needs.
