If you’re a wheelchair user, have limited mobility, or are travelling with someone who does, finding out in advance whether a venue is truly step-free (and not just “accessible” in name only) can make or break a day out. We’ve done the legwork around the Karen and Langata neighbourhoods of Nairobi, checking out restaurants, cafés, and shopping spots so you can plan your visit with confidence.

Wheelchair Accessible Restaurants
Talisman Restaurant, Karen
Fully accessible, including accessible bathrooms. A great choice if step-free access matters throughout your visit, not just at the entrance.
Matt Bronze Foundry & Café, Langata
Fully accessible with accessible bathrooms. This spot doubles as a workshop and café, so there’s plenty to see as well as a relaxed place to eat.
Cultiva Farm Restaurant, Langata
Step-free and accessible, though the car park is gravel, which may be trickier for manual wheelchair users. The bathroom can be accessed but isn’t a dedicated disabled-access bathroom, so plan accordingly.
Tin Roof Café, Langata Link, Langata
There’s one step to get into the restaurant, but it’s step-free once you’re inside. No accessible bathroom on site.
Tin Roof Café, House of Treasures, Karen
Same setup as the Langata Link branch: one step at the entrance, step-free inside, and no accessible bathroom.
Utumaduni Café, Langata
Step-free access, but no accessible bathroom.
Artcaffe Restaurants (Langata, Hardy, and Karen)
Consider this your safe haven. Artcaffe locations across Nairobi, and even along safari routes, consistently offer great coffee, good pastries, safe and tasty food, and an accessible bathroom. When in doubt, an Artcaffe is a reliable bet.
Karen Blixen Coffee Garden, Karen
This historic coffee estate-turned-boutique-hotel is wheelchair accessible throughout the property, including the gardens and dining areas. Several of the cottage bathrooms have been renovated with large shower cubicles big enough for a wheelchair, grab rails, and shower stools, though these are guest-room facilities rather than dedicated public accessible restrooms. With multiple restaurants on site (including the Garden Restaurant and Blixen Pool Bar & Restaurant), it’s a lovely, relaxed spot for a meal in beautiful grounds. As specific public bathroom accessibility wasn’t confirmed, it’s worth calling ahead if that’s a priority for your visit.
Carnivore Restaurant, Langata
This famous open-air “Beast of a Feast” restaurant is listed as wheelchair accessible, with surfaces and transport options also wheelchair accessible for organised tours. It’s a popular, well-established venue, though we don’t yet have confirmed details on its bathroom accessibility, so we’d recommend calling ahead to check.
Accessible Shopping
Kobe Tough Beads and Leather, Karen
A women’s empowerment cooperative where you can tour the bead-making workshop, meet the artisans, and shop for handcrafted beadwork and leather goods.
Matt Bronze Foundry, Langata
Fully accessible with accessible bathrooms and a café on site, making it an easy stop to combine browsing with a meal break.
Langata Link Shops
Relatively step-free overall, though some individual shops have one step at the entrance. No accessible bathroom, but there is a café.
Utumaduni African Arts & Crafts Market
Step-free, with a gravel car park to navigate. No accessible bathroom, but a café is available.
Sandstorm Leather
Gravel car park and step-free access. No bathroom on site, but there is a coffee shop.
House of Treasures
Gravel car park with step-free access. No accessible bathroom, but there is a café.
A Few Tips for Your Visit
– Gravel car parks** come up often in this area, so if you use a manual wheelchair, it’s worth bringing a companion or planning routes that minimise rough terrain.
– “Step-free” doesn’t always mean “accessible bathroom.” Several venues on this list are easy to get into but don’t have facilities designed for wheelchair users, so plan bathroom stops accordingly.
– Artcaffe is your fallback. With multiple locations across Nairobi and along safari routes, it’s consistently one of the most reliable choices for full accessibility.
