Swivel Seat, Ramp, or Powerlift? Choosing the Right Vehicle for Your Mobility Needs
One of the most common questions we get before a trip is some version of: “What kind of vehicle will I actually be traveling in?” It’s a fair question — and an important one. Not every accessible vehicle is accessible in the same way, and the right choice depends entirely on the person, not just the trip.
At Accessible Travel Kenya, our fleet is built around three main types of adaptation: the swivel seat, the ramp, and the powerlift. Here’s what each one is, who it’s for, and why the difference actually matters.
Swivel Seat
A swivel seat is exactly what it sounds like — a seat that rotates outward toward the person getting in, rather than requiring them to climb up and twist into a fixed seat.
Who it’s for:
- Older adults
- Children
- People who can transfer out of a wheelchair but need extra support getting in and out
Why it helps:
- The seat turns out to meet you, instead of you having to reach into the vehicle
- Much easier to sit down or stand up from
- No awkward struggling or straining to climb in
The swivel seat is the right call when someone doesn’t need to travel in their wheelchair, but does need the transfer itself to be safer and less strenuous. It’s often the most comfortable option for guests who are ambulatory some of the time but tire easily or have balance or joint concerns.
Ramp (Manual or Powered)
A ramp allows a wheelchair user to roll directly into the vehicle and remain seated in their own chair for the entire journey — no transfer required.
Who it’s for:
- Wheelchair users who need or prefer to stay in their chair while traveling
Why it helps:
- Roll in and out with ease, no lifting or transferring involved
- Available as manual or powered, depending on what the guest needs
- The wheelchair is secured and locked in place for the ride
Ramps are the right choice for most manual wheelchair users, and for guests who find transferring in and out of a seat uncomfortable, risky, or simply unnecessary. It keeps the guest in the equipment they know best — their own chair — for the whole trip.
Powerlift (Motorized Platform Lift)
A powerlift is a motorized platform that lifts the wheelchair — chair, occupant, and all — smoothly up into the vehicle. It’s the option built for the heaviest and most complex mobility equipment.
Who it’s for:
- People using large or electric wheelchairs
- Anyone who isn’t able to use a ramp, whether due to the incline, the weight of the chair, or personal preference
Why it helps:
- The platform lifts the guest and their chair smoothly, without requiring them to navigate an incline
- Handles heavy chairs that a ramp alone might not be practical for
Powerlifts matter most for electric wheelchairs, which can weigh significantly more than manual chairs and aren’t always safe or practical to push up a ramp — particularly a steep one. If a guest’s chair is heavy, bulky, or motorized, this is usually the safer and more dependable option.
Why This Distinction Matters
The reason we ask detailed questions before every booking isn’t bureaucracy — it’s because sending the wrong type of accessible vehicle can be just as unworkable as sending no accessible vehicle at all. A ramp is no help to a guest who needs a powerlift for their electric chair. A powerlift is overkill (and sometimes unnecessary waiting) for a guest who’d be perfectly comfortable and quicker with a swivel seat.
Getting this right starts with one simple thing: telling us about your equipment and your needs before you travel, not on the day. It’s the difference between a vehicle that technically shows up, and one that actually works for you.
